V e g a n Filipino Baked Turon

Coming from a Filipino family, one of my goals is to make healthy vegan alternatives with my favorite Filipino dishes. I looove Filipino food and it’s hard to resist when your Filipino grandma knows exactly what you like and tries to force you to eat it! (I love her soo much)

Turon has always been a childhood favorite. Going to Kainan (or parties) when I was a kid, there would always be turon around. I love it so much I decided to take a healthier twist on the Filipino turon. Vegan Baked Turon. Here’s the recipe.

  • Coconut Oil

  • A pack of Lumpia Wrapper

Add cinnamon and brown sugar together in a bowl, mix it up. Cut the plantains in half and make banana slices. Cut them about medium width. After you have made slices, dip the plantains into the brown sugar and cinnamon mix. Coat both sides of the plantain. Place the coated plantains onto another plate and repeat until you’ve finished cinnamon/sugar coating all the plantain slices.

Once done, its time to wrap them in lumpia (eggroll) wrapping paper. I bought mine at Seafood City but you can get them at any Asian market. Take one wrapper onto a plate and angle it like a diamond shape, and place about 2 -3 slices of the cinnamon sugar plantains near the bottom of the diamond. Fold the ends and start rolling. Think of it as rolling a burrito. (like when you go to Chipotle lol) Make as much Turon as you like. Heat your oven to 375 F, grab your coconut oil and start glossy your Turon in coconut oil. The coconut adds an amazing flavor to the mix but it also makes the Turon crispy. Place Turon on a baking tray and pop it into the oven. Bake for 15-20 depending on your oven. I like to flip the Turon around so both sides crisp. You know when its done when they start turning golden brown.

And there you have it! A healthy alternative to deep frying them. You’re getting healthy fats by adding coconut oil and by adding cinnamon with the brown sugar it calms sugar cravings. So less sugar intake! Enjoy!
